20th National Renewable Energy Conference & Green Expo

University of Dhaka & GreenTech Foundation Bangladesh jointly organizes National Renewable Energy Conference & Green Expo every year. This is the 20th year and this year the title of the conference will be “Sustainable Energy for Climate Actions: Bangladesh Perspective during Covid-19 pandemic”. It is dedicated to Mujib 100 Years and it was rescheduled to be held on 24-25 June 2020.

Unfortunately, we were not able to organize a physical conference as originally planned, due to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic situation. Nevertheless, we arranged the Conference to take place virtually and were able to successfully complete it.

Green buildings are smart buildings, these buildings drive their inhabitants to a sustainable future on their own. Worldwide green buildings are considered symbols of trust, elegance, futurism, and responsible. As buildings account for around 40% of a nation’s total energy consumption, it’s not possible to ensure secured energy for the future without planned and eco-friendly urbanization with green commercial buildings

One of the GreenTech Foundation’s member built the Cityscape Tower that has achieved first LEED Platinum certification from United State
Green Building Council (USGBC) as Commercial Project in Bangladesh.

SMART GREEN VILLAGE INITIATIVE AT MOHESHPUR, JHENAIDAH

Under the leadership of an eminent personality, Major General Salahuddin Miaji, Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) recently, GreenTech Foundation Bangladesh along with the Department of Environmental Studies of BUP has taken an initiative for SMART village. A village named “Porapara” under Swaruppur Uninon Thana: Maheshpur, Dist: Jhenaidah has been selected for the pilot project of model SMART Green Village. Maheshpur Upazila is a part of Jhenaidah District in the Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The reason why we chose this village was [that] if we can solve the problem here then we can set a model that can be used anywhere in the country.

For us, a smart green village is a human, hi-tech, and happy village that ensures an enhanced quality of life that contributes to the harmony, happiness, and well-being of all the villagers. A smart green village would have the required basic physical and social infrastructure with a layer of smart information and communication embedded in the infrastructure to improve governance and delivery of services, livelihood, and economic opportunities. Our focus is on creating a sustainable and inclusive development model that can be easily replicated.

This model is based on the convergence of resources and effort by the GreenTech Foundation Bangladesh, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), EDAS, and enlightened villagers of the Porapara Village, of Moheshpur, Jhenaidah.

In the first phase, we are concentrating on providing

(i) Basic amenities i.e. regular electricity supply through clean energy (solar home system), sanitation and solid waste management, clean fuel (biogas) for cooking through biogas plant, organic fertilizer, sustainable mobility and housing;
(ii) Integrated healthcare at affordable prices through the setting up of e-Doctor Clinics and Smart Green Village wellness centres;

(iii) Education and skill development through quality enhancement of education in schools and setting up of smart village training centres in this village for continuous up-gradation of skills based on the needs of the village and by creating a skill development hub;

WAST MANAGEMENT

Several initiatives have been taken jointly with Practical Action Bangladesh to build connections between all stakeholders for harnessing the private sector to improve sustainable waste management and to open up the dialogue on how they can move and work more collaborate way thus mutual support each other’s endeavors. It showcased the private sector’s engagement including potentiality, learning opportunities, and challenges or good practices in waste management business that helps a financial organization to cock out the present flow in waste management business.

CONSULTATION MEETINGS TO ENSURE THE ACCESS TO SUSTAINABLE FINANCING FOR ROOT-LEVEL WASTE AND RECYCLING ENTERPRISES

Later in the Covid-19 era, GreenTech Foundation has been very active in this area. It has arranged 5 consultation meetings online “to ensure the access of sustainable financing for root-level waste and recycling business” by communicating with many relevant groups and individuals such as financial institutions, non-banking financial institutions, and related govt. wings and individuals, local governments, municipalities, city corporations, NGOs, and agencies such as Practical Action, and Karmojibi Nari invited them and coordinated their participation and strengths. Since there are policy-level challenges and where there are policy-level supporting directions, financial institutions still show strong reluctance to fund this sector and/or exploit policy-level ambiguity where possible. That is why it is crucial that higher-level awareness is created among all the stakeholders and that more of their support is ensured, including policy-level changes. Since this is not about an individual sector and a handful of entrepreneurs and root-level workers, this is related to the future welfare of all of us and our country. For these reasons, GreenTech Foundation Bangladesh has put in the effort. These practical activities were supported by European Union.

OUT COME

Such hard work paid off well. There was increased awareness among all the stakeholders involved. They thought about the solutions and expressed ways of how they can participate to improve the conditions. The rigidity of financial institutions to fund the waste management sector was changing. Pilot projects were named. A consultation paper was published named “Strategies for Access to Subsidized Finance by Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs involved in Waste Collection, Processing, and Recycling” by Dr. Shah Md Ahsan Habib, Director, Training, Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM). There were successful policy-level changes and we are hopeful of the potential for more positive policy changes in the future

Achieving economic growth and sustainable development requires that we urgently reduce our ecological footprint by changing the way we produce and consume goods and resources. Agriculture is the biggest user of water worldwide, and irrigation now claims close to 70 percent of all freshwater for human use.

The efficient management of our shared natural resources, and the way we dispose of toxic waste and pollutants, are important targets to achieve this goal. Encouraging industries, businesses, and consumers to recycle and reduce waste is equally important, as is supporting developing countries to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption by 2030.
